Theme: “Dublin Blues” and Other Songs of Guy Clark.

Guy Clark – who died in 2016 at age 74 – was a great Texas singer-songwriter who began releasing albums in 1974. In the liner notes to Old No. 1, Guy’s first album, Jerry Jeff Walker referred to Guy’s songs as “the natural music of the acoustic guitar.” These songs were all written or co-written by Guy.

Theme: Songs of Chuck Berry (1926-2017)

Chuck Berry, who died in 2017 at the age of 90, was an influential guitar player, singer and songwriter and one of the founding and foundational figures of rock ‘n’ roll. Berry was a St. Louis blues musician who signed with Chess Records in Chicago and began releasing singles in 1955 and LPs in 1957. It wasn’t long before he was one of the early stars of rock ‘n’ roll.

, one of the most influential musicians in the development of country rock, flamed out and died of an overdose of alcohol and morphine, 50 years ago this past week, on September 19, 1973. He was only 26 years old.

Themes: Remembering Loretta Lynn and Mary McCaslin.

Legendary country singer Loretta Lynn (1932-2022) died on October 4 at age 90. Loretta Lynn came from humble beginnings as a coal miner’s daughter from Butcher Hollow, Kentucky. Her autobiography, the feature film that was based on it, and her signature song are called “Coal Miner’s Daughter.”

Mary McCaslin (1946-2022) was a folksinger, songwriter and pioneering open-tuning guitarist, who died on October 2 at age 75 following a seven-year battle with progressive supranuclear palsy. Canadian Spaces on CKCU in Ottawa is Canada’s longest-running folk music radio program. It is heard Saturday mornings from 10:00 am until noon (Eastern time).

It was hosted for more than 33 years by the late Chopper McKinnon and is now hosted by Chris White and a rotating cast of co-hosts.
