The Original Sloth Band
– teenaged brothers Chris Whiteley and Ken Whiteley and their friend Tom Evans – played their first gig in 1965. Their band name for that gig was Tubby Fats Original Allstar Downtown Syncopated Big Rock Jug Band but they soon evolved into the Original Sloth Band. Sadly, Tom Evans passed away from cancer in 2009, but, in June, Chris and Ken with some guest musicians played a concert at Hugh’s Room in Toronto to mark the milestone anniversary.

My dear and close friend Robert Resnik of Burlington, Vermont. Robert passed away on July 21 at age 72 after struggling with several health issues including Parkinson’s disease. Robert was a singer and musician who played many different instruments in many styles of folk music. For the past 29 years, Robert hosted All the Traditions, a great folk music show on Vermont Public Radio. In 2023, Robert was inducted into the Folk Radio Hall of Fame sponsored by Folk Alliance International. Professionally, Robert was a librarian for about 30 years at the Fletcher Free Library in Burlington, Vermont.

Theme: Peggy Seeger at 90.


Peggy Seeger – who I’ve known for many years – turned 90 on June 17. Peggy was born in 1935 to a musical and activist family. Her father, Charles Seeger, was a musicologist, composer and folklorist. Her mother, Ruth Crawford Seeger, was a composer and musicologist. Her older half-brother was Pete Seeger, and her other siblings were Mike Seeger, Barbara Seeger and Penny Seeger. Peggy’s life partner from the 1950s until his death in 1989 was the preeminent British folksinger and songwriter Ewan MacColl.

The show includes some of Peggy’s original songs, as well as traditional folksongs and songs written by other songwriters that were part of her repertoire from some of Peggy’s many recordings and collaborations, and by other artists.

Theme: “Dublin Blues” and Other Songs of Guy Clark.

Guy Clark – who died in 2016 at age 74 – was a great Texas singer-songwriter who began releasing albums in 1974. In the liner notes to Old No. 1, Guy’s first album, Jerry Jeff Walker referred to Guy’s songs as “the natural music of the acoustic guitar.” These songs were all written or co-written by Guy.
