Theme: Dave Van Ronk at 90.

Dave Van Ronk – who died in 2002 at age 65 while battling cancer – would have turned 90 three weeks ago on June 30. Dave – who grew up in the New York City boroughs of Brooklyn and Queens – arrived in Greenwich Village in the 1950s where he began playing in the early folk clubs. He was a great guitarist and influential singer with a wide-ranging repertoire that moved seamlessly between folk, blues, jazz, cabaret and much more. He was a friend and mentor to generations of musicians who followed him in the village – most notably, Bob Dylan. And, not just musicians. I consider the late nights I spent on Dave’s couch in the Village, and the nights I spent with him in my apartment in Montreal in the 1970s and ‘80s, talking about music and arguing about politics to be essential parts of my education.

MacDougal Street in Greenwich Village was the center of the Greenwich Village folk scene and Dave became affectionately known as The Mayor of MacDougal Street – which was also the title of the memoir that Dave was working on with Elijah Wald at the time of his death. Elijah finished the book writing in Dave’s voice and I think it’s one of the best books ever about the ‘60s folk scene.

International Sex Workers Day is marked annually on June 2 to honour sex workers and call attention to the often inhumane conditions of their work. Theme: If It Wasn’t for the Work of the Weavers.

The Weavers – who came together in 1948 – were Pete Seeger (1919-2014) and Lee Hays (1914-1981), who had sung together earlier in The Almanac Singers, Ronnie Gilbert (1926-2015) and Fred Hellerman (1927-2016). Despite being victims of the McCarthy Era blacklist, The Weavers were the folk group that inspired The Kingston Trio, Peter, Paul & Mary, and all the other folk groups of the 1950s and ‘60s who fueled the folk boom. Pete left the group in 1958 and was replaced by Erik Darling (1933-2008) for four years, and then briefly by Frank Hamilton (1934-) and Bernie Krause (1938-) before disbanding in 1964. The original Weavers continued to come together occasionally – most notably in 1963 and 1980 – for reunion concerts.

Theme: Remembering Josh White, Jr. (1940-2024), Alan Senauke (1947-2024) and David Mallett (1951-2024).

The theme on this edition of Stranger Songs is Remembering Josh White Jr., Alan Senauke and David Mallett, three old friends who passed away last month. I’d known all three of them since the 1970s and all of them had played at the Golem, the Montreal folk club I ran in the 1970s and ‘80s.

Josh White, Jr. died on December 28 at age 84. Josh – who was affectionately known as Donny off stage – began his career at age 4 when his father, Josh White, the legendary blues and folk singer and guitarist, began bringing the young boy up on stage to perform a song or two with him. Josh White Jr. had a remarkable career that literally spanned 80 years. Josh was a wonderful performer of folk and blues material and a masterful interpreter of his father’s repertoire.

He was also a member of several other groups including The Blue Flame Stringband – with Kate Brislin and Suzy & Eric Thompson – and a solo artist.
