Folk Roots/Folk Branches: The radio show returns

I hosted the Folk Roots/Folk Branches radio show on CKUT in Montreal for almost 14 years – from 1994 through 2007 when a new job brought me to Ottawa.

I’m pleased to announce that Folk Roots/Folk Branches is returning as one of the original programs produced for the new online folk roots radio service at Roots Music Canada. It’s a one hour, thematic program that will first air every Saturday and then repeat daily through the rest of the week.

The schedule is:

Saturday – 10 am
Sunday – 10 am
Monday – 4 pm
Tuesday – 4 pm
Wednesday – 12 noon
Thursday – 12 noon
Friday – 12 noon

Times are listed in the Eastern Time Zone. Adjust the schedule for wherever you might be.

Folk Roots/Folk Branches starts airing this coming Saturday, January 11. The theme for the first show is music from my choices for the top 13 folk rooted and folk branched albums of 2013.

Other original programs on the Roots Music Canada radio schedule are The Open Chord with Bill Garrett, The Andy Frank Show, and From Cover to Cover with Michael Wrycraft.

The schedule also includes rebroadcasts of Folk Music & Other Stuff with Sonny Ochs, Radio Boogie with Steve Pritchard, Just Us Folk with Jan Vanderhorst, and The Midnight Special with Rich Warren.

It's a stellar lineup of folk and roots radio programs.

"Phil Ochs : There But For Fortune" is coming to Ottawa

The Ottawa Folk Festival has announced they’ll be presenting a screening of the acclaimed documentary, Phil Ochs: There But For Fortune, on Tuesday, June 14, 7:00 pm, at the Mayfair Theatre (1074 Bank Street)

I’ve been looking forward to an opportunity to see this film about Phil Ochs, one of the greatest topical singer-songwriters of the 1960s since it first began screening at film festivals and art house cinemas in January. Reviews and word-of-mouth from people I know who have seen it have been totally positive.

There will be an after-party down the street at Patty’s Pub (1186 Bank Street) after the screening featuring a sing-along of Phil Ochs songs led by Arthur McGregor and a question-and-answer session with the always-wonderful Sonny Ochs, Phil’s sister, and the person I think is most responsible for ensuring Phil’s songs – and his memory – have remained central to the folk music scene over the past 35 years. A ticket stub from the screening is needed to get into the party.

Advance tickets ($15) are available at the Ottawa Folklore Centre (1111 Bank Street).
