Theme: A Tribute to Rosalie Sorrels (1933-2017).

Rosalie Sorrels & Mike Regenstreif (1993)

Rosalie Sorrels, who died in 2017 at age 83, was a great, highly influential and legendary singer, songwriter and storyteller.

I was still a teenager when I met Rosalie for the first time when she played a four- or five-night stand at the Back Door Coffee House in Montreal, sometime around 1970. It was while she was in Montreal for that gig that Rosalie wrote “Travelin’ Lady,” which quickly became her signature song. Rosalie became a great friend and I worked with her often presenting her in concerts in Montreal and at The Golem, the folk club I ran in the ‘70s and ‘80s. In the late ‘70s and early ‘80s, I ran a small booking agency for about five years and Rosalie was one of my clients.

The show includes some of Rosalie’s recordings and versions of songs from her repertoire – some of which she wrote and some of which she made her own – as performed by many other artists; as well as a couple of songs written in tribute to her.

International Sex Workers Day is marked annually on June 2 to honour sex workers and call attention to the often inhumane conditions of their work. While some choose sex work voluntarily, too many – too often underaged – are forced into it, by their dire circumstances, because they are being exploited, or because they are victims of human trafficking.

Some of these songs are explicitly about sex workers or are sung from their perspectives, some of them mention sex workers as part of the stories they’re telling, and some of them are implicitly about sex workers.

Buddy Holly, who grew up in Lubbock, Texas, was one of the great artists of early rock ‘n’ roll. Tragically, he lost his life at the tender age of 22 on February 3, 1959 in a small plane crash that also claimed Ritchie Valens and The Big Bopper, an event that Don McLean referred to as “the day the music died,” in his song, American Pie.

Guy Clark – who died in 2016 at age 74 – was a great Texas singer-songwriter who began releasing albums in 1974. In the liner notes to Old No. 1, Guy’s first album, Jerry Jeff Walker referred to Guy’s songs as “the natural music of the acoustic guitar.” These songs were all written or co-written by Guy.

Terri Thal is the author of the newly published memoir, My Greenwich Village: Dave, Bob and Me. She became involved in the folk music scene while still a teenager in New York and was the first wife and manager of Dave Van Ronk. She was also the first manager of Bob Dylan and a number of other artists in the 1960s. I spoke with Terri on October 13 via Zoom.

The next five songs punctuated my conversation with Terri.

Note: This is the first edition of Stranger Songs that I’ve recorded since the day of horrific and unfathomable terrorism committed by Hamas in Israel on October 7, and the entirely predictable consequences that followed in Gaza. I despair for the innocent victims in Israel and in Gaza who have been injured and killed these last few weeks. May there soon be peace, shalom, salaam, in Israel, Gaza, and the West Bank; in Ukraine, and everywhere else on Earth torn apart by war. These are just a few of the songs I was reminded of in the days that followed October 7.
